Gurre Castle in northern Zealand was a significant Danish royal hunting and administrative castle. Valdemar IV Atterdag, who died there in 1375, was especially associated with the castle.
Valdemar IV's death at Gurre Castle ended one of the most consequential Danish reigns of the fourteenth century. His passing opened the succession that brought his daughter Margaret I to effective rule over Denmark and, eventually, all three Scandinavian kingdoms.
