Helsingborg was a strategically vital Danish fortified town on the Sound, controlling the narrowest crossing between Scania and Zealand. Christopher of Bavaria died suddenly there in 1448 without an heir.
Christopher's death at Helsingborg reopened the Scandinavian succession and led to the election of Christian I as the first Oldenburg king of Denmark. The town's position on the Sound made it economically and militarily significant throughout the conflict over Hanseatic and Danish maritime dominance.
