Reynald of Châtillon is remembered as the great villain of the crusader east, a reckless and violent adventurer whose provocations helped bring on the disaster of Hattin. Both Muslim and Christian sources present a brutal, ambitious, and faithless figure — a man who tortured the Patriarch of Antioch, raided into the Arabian heartlands toward the holy cities of Islam, and broke truces by attacking Muslim caravans, outrages that gave Saladin both motive and justification for war.
The Muslim sources regarded him with particular loathing, and the famous tradition of his death holds that Saladin executed him personally after Hattin, having sworn to kill him for his violations — sparing the captured king Guy but striking down Reynald with his own hand. Even the Christian sources, while sometimes admiring his boldness, could not defend his treacheries.
