Visingsö

An island in Lake Vättern associated with medieval Swedish royal power.

Overview

Visingsö is an island in Lake Vättern in Småland that served as a Swedish royal center in the high medieval period. Nas Castle on its northern tip was a primary royal residence and administrative base for several Swedish kings.

Legacy

Visingsö's island position made it defensible and suitable for royal administration during periods of political instability. Its importance declined as Stockholm developed into Sweden's primary political center in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
