Stainmore is a Pennine pass between Yorkshire and Cumbria in northern England. Eric Bloodaxe, the last Norse king of York, was killed there around 954 in ambush, traditionally attributed to Northumbrian interests acting in concert with the English crown.
Eric's death at Stainmore ended Viking kingship in northern England. His killing allowed Eadred of England to consolidate control over Northumbria and ended the alternating English and Norse royal authority over York that had characterized the 870s–950s.
