Senieji Trakai

A Lithuanian castle site traditionally associated with Vytautas’s birth before his later connection to Trakai.

Overview

Senieji Trakai (Old Trakai) was an early Lithuanian castle site associated with the Gediminid dynasty, traditionally connected to Vytautas the Great before his career centered on New Trakai and Vilnius. The site represents the early fortification network that supported Gediminid expansion.

Legacy

Old Trakai declined in importance as New Trakai — built on a lake island — became Vytautas's primary residence and symbol of Lithuanian ducal power. The transition from Senieji Trakai to the new castle reflects Vytautas's consolidation of Lithuanian political architecture in the period of his greatest power.
