Ribe in southwestern Jutland was one of the earliest urban and market centers in Scandinavia, developing as a trading site in the early eighth century. Denmark's oldest surviving city, it also became an early episcopal center during Scandinavian Christianization.
Ribe's early bishopric, established in the ninth century, made it a center of Christian mission in Scandinavia. Ansgar, the "Apostle of the North," used it as an access point for missionary activity. Its role as both a commercial and ecclesiastical center made it important in the formation of the Danish church and urban network.
