Cardross near the Clyde estuary in Scotland was a royal manor where Robert the Bruce spent his final years and died in June 1329. The manor was his preferred residence during his last period of illness.
Robert's death at Cardross ended the reign of the king who had secured Scottish independence through the Declaration of Arbroath (1320) and the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton (1328), by which England recognized Scottish sovereignty. His heart was removed after death and taken on crusade by James Douglas, part of a tradition of vow-fulfillment by proxy.
