Lambeth on the south bank of the Thames opposite Westminster was the primary residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury in London. Lambeth Palace was established as the archiepiscopal seat by the late twelfth century.
Lambeth Palace became the center of archiepiscopal administration in England. Its position directly across from Westminster gave it political proximity to English governance and made it the institutional location of church-crown negotiations throughout the medieval period.
