Gutierre Muñoz in Ávila province was the location where Isabella I of Castile was proclaimed queen in December 1474 following the death of her brother Henry IV. The proclamation was a key moment in establishing her right to the Castilian throne against the rival claim of Juana la Beltraneja.
The succession crisis resolved at Gutierre Muñoz set in motion the union of Castile and Aragon through Isabella's marriage to Ferdinand II. The contested nature of her accession and the subsequent War of Castilian Succession (1475–1479) were directly rooted in the disputed circumstances of Henry IV's death and Isabella's proclamation.
