Domrémy in the Meuse valley of northeastern France was the village where Joan of Arc was born around 1412. The village sat near the disputed frontier between French-controlled and Burgundian territory during the Hundred Years' War.
Joan later described receiving her first visions at Domrémy around the age of thirteen, hearing the voices of Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret directing her to support the French crown.
Domrémy's borderland position — at the edge of Lorraine and near territories contested between the Armagnac and Burgundian factions — shaped the political and military world Joan encountered in her youth. Local raiding and displacement were realities for village communities in this region.
After Joan's canonization in 1920, the village was renamed Domrémy-la-Pucelle. During Joan's medieval life it was a modest rural village with no particular distinction beyond its proximity to frontier instability.
