A western Norwegian island region traditionally associated with Magnus Eriksson's drowning.
Bømlo is an island off the Norwegian coast in Hordaland associated with the death of Magnus Eriksson in 1374, traditionally by drowning. Magnus had lost effective rule in both Sweden and Norway years before his death.
Magnus Eriksson's drowning near Bømlo closed a reign marked by dynastic ambition, political defeat, and the catastrophic impact of the Black Death on Scandinavian governance. He had been deposed in Sweden in 1364 and effective Norwegian control had passed to his son Haakon VI.
