Bermersheim vor der Höhe in the Rhineland is traditionally identified as the birthplace of Hildegard of Bingen, born around 1098. Hildegard was offered as an oblate to the church by her noble family and placed with the anchoress Jutta of Sponheim at Disibodenberg monastery.
The Rhineland context of Hildegard's birth placed her within the network of reform monasticism that characterized German ecclesiastical culture in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Her later achievements as abbess, visionary, composer, and theological correspondent far exceeded anything that could be predicted from this rural background.
Bermersheim is historically significant primarily as the starting point of Hildegard's biography; the village has no broader medieval importance independent of her birth there.
